Empowering others

Excited about the pent up demand for iOS database solutions, Egbert Freidrich was originally a booking agent for leading rock bands and is now a FileMaker database developer in Germany.

FileMaker: How did you become interested in becoming a FileMaker Certified Developer?

  • Egbert Friedrich

Friedrich: I was working as a booking agent for bands like Boy George and others. I used FileMaker to coordinate all the details. I liked FileMaker so much that I decided to make it the center of my career. I learned it on my own and eventually became a FileMaker Certified Developer.

FileMaker: Why do you have such a keen interest in mentoring?

  • Egbert Friedrich

Friedrich: I have more work than I can handle and I would like to see more young developers join the FileMaker ranks. FileMaker is a solid development platform with many advantages and a bright future. Young, tech-oriented people need to realize how easy yet powerful FileMaker is. They also need to know that skills in FileMaker are highly valued.

FileMaker: What are some of the biggest advantages of learning FileMaker?

  • Egbert Friedrich

Friedrich: With the proliferation of iOS devices, there is a lot of pent-up demand for FileMaker Go mobile solutions. A big benefit for young people is that they don’t have to learn two programming languages, one for the front end and another for the back end of a solution. Instead, they can just learn FileMaker, and that’s much easier than mastering a traditional programming language.

FileMaker: What is your approach to mentoring?

  • Egbert Friedrich

Friedrich: What I provide – and what I’m trying to build a community around – is a full range of different training, from one-to-one mentoring to apprenticeships across multiple countries. Rather than just train a person and let them go, I am fostering ongoing connections between experienced developers and young people interested in making a living from FileMaker development.

FileMaker: Are you working with an apprentice now?

  • Egbert Friedrich

Friedrich: Yes, I’m helping a young biologist at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine. Together, we are building a solution that tracks dissections of mice with varying stages of cancer. Although his background is biological research, he is readily picking up FileMaker — and seeing how this new solution will make life as a researcher far easier. He is very hungry to learn more; I just have to feed him. He’s justifiably proud of what he has been able to accomplish in FileMaker.

FileMaker: We’ve heard you spearhead a FileMaker conference in Europe. Is that correct?

  • Egbert Friedrich

Friedrich: Yes, I started in 2013 with the first pan-European Unconference. I and other like-minded developers decided there are far too few possibilities to talk to, learn from and hang out with our peers in a relaxed environment. It was extremely well received by the European high-level developers, so I continued to head this in 2014. The event became indispensable for European high-level developers. It is now ongoing, happening each year in the beginning of June.

On a similar note, we offered a series of intensive FileMaker Master Classes earlier this year in London and Berlin led by Ray Cologon from Australia. The classes were quickly sold out — a testament to the vibrant global FileMaker community. With FileMaker, I am part of a vibrant community and I can give back to others through mentoring.

FileMaker: What advice would you give to young people interested in learning FileMaker?

  • Egbert Friedrich

Friedrich: Check out the many resources and talk to some of the Certified Developers directly! In my opinion, it is much easier to make a solid living out of FileMaker development than it is with web development or graphic design. There are many resources for learning FileMaker and there is a vast, strong community of people willing to share their skills.

Young, tech-oriented people need to realize how easy yet powerful FileMaker is. They also need to know that skills in FileMaker are highly valued.
