"With the recent launch of FileMaker 13, customers will find it easier than ever to design innovative mobile solutions."

Jan 22, 2014 - Database design can be complicated for non-developers, so for the less software savvy, our pick of the various database applications out there is FileMaker Pro. It's an ideal way for those not well-versed in database design to create a database or ad-hoc report. With FileMaker Pro, small businesses can create powerful relational databases; easy-to-use does not translate into poor database development.
Jan 3, 2014 - If you're already a FileMaker user, the upgrade shouldn't take much thinking about. This version builds significantly on the offering you already have - especially if you need to deploy to mobile devices. If you're looking for a database building tool for the first time, FileMaker Pro 13 has many attractions for you too. Not least of which are the powerful new layout features that make it easy to get started with with database creation.
Dec 19, 2013 - "FileMaker reigns supreme when it comes to building beautiful, custom apps for non-programmers. The commitment to detail and aesthetics is apparent in using the software and I actually find it an enjoyable platform on which to create an app. FileMaker Pro 13 is an easy four and a half out of five stars and an Editors' Choice for business software, and database apps."
Dec 18, 2013 - "FileMaker 13 includes something ground-breaking: WebDirect. WebDirect is a new HTML5-based FileMaker technology that makes it possible for a database built in FileMaker Pro to be accessed through a browser [and] it ...works very, very well. This is the most significant upgrade for FileMaker [in] almost a decade. If you're a developer, I urge you to upgrade, whether you're an ace or a struggling do-it-yourselfer. IT managers should be curious about WebDirect as an alternative to FileMaker Pro for users who don't need to make changes to the design or structure of databases, and of course, if you are responsible for software purchases, you will want to upgrade to FileMaker 13 as soon as the databases you use begin to take advantage of the new features. Even for lone users, FileMaker Pro 13 is the best version of the best all-purpose Mac and iOS database tool."
Dec 16, 2013 - FileMaker (an Apple subsidiary) recently launched FileMaker 13...and I can envision FileMaker as a potential solution for organizations that need to create database- and forms-driven applications for iPad and iPhone users without the need of a programmer. FileMaker 13 includes documentation and tutorials that even a semi-technical user can understand. There are also improvements to design capabilities that are easy for non-designers to put to work, ... and drag-and-drop data fields in design layouts. [It also] includes tools for creating iPad and iPhone apps with slide controls, popovers, and the ability to scan records using gestures. ...I've come to rank FileMaker as a growing mobility player, because they offer tools for non-programmers to create a wide range of solutions for iPad and iPhone users in their corporate workforce.
Dec 11, 2013 - Making a Web interface behave more like a desktop interface was a major goal for FileMaker 13, and perhaps the most dramatic example of that is the ability to drag images or other content into suitable fields in a database layout, right in your Web browser. Even better, and more important, is that a change to data anywhere in a FileMaker database is instantly transmitted to, and reflected by, views of that database on any platform. [And] as more and more database access leaves the relative safety of the corporate network, what with Web access and handheld apps, FileMaker Pro 13 Advanced now offers AES 256-bit encryption from end to end, even when you're using an iOS app to access or update your database.
Dec 5, 2013 - "In FileMaker 13, we are seeing better server performance and superb handling of web viewer fields," says Nicholas Graham, an IT administrator at J-List, an e-commerce retail shop, who's been using the new version. "FileMaker 13 layout design is much easier and cleaner than in previous versions." For iPad and iPhone users FileMaker has added a raft of new features including slide controls, popovers and the ability to scan records using gestures. iPad and iPhone layouts can now be created in one step; and iOS solutions can include single-click capture of bar codes using the iPad (or iPhone) camera and custom keyboards that speed data entry.

Dec 3, 2013 - FileMaker revealed a major update to its FileMaker database platform that allows users to access FileMaker databases through a browser. The marquee feature of the new FileMaker 13 is FileMaker WebDirect, which allows FileMaker to be used through an HTML5-compliant browser. Changes made through the Web are updated to the FileMaker database in real time, so you can see up-to-date information regardless of which client was used to make the updates. Other new features include AES 256-bit encryption, and an HTML5 administrative console in FileMaker Server 13. FileMaker also has several new features specific to database developers.
Sep 6, 2013 - When Dodge City Public Schools in Kansas started handing out iPads to teachers and students last year, Ray Wipf started thinking about how the devices' use could go beyond mobile apps, Web research, and note-taking to [provide] efficient ways to deliver student assessments. As the core technology application, Wipf used FileMaker, a cross-platform relational database solution that three years earlier replaced a legacy, PC-based assessment system that was difficult to customize and required developer support and services. Previously used only on desktops and laptops, FileMaker now runs on all 1,200 of the district's iPads — a number that's expected to increase to 6,500 by 2014.
Portable ultrasound and the FileMaker Platform provide immediate answers and feedback for physicians and patients
Sep 5, 2013 - "These days, care is all about delivering the highest quality for the lowest cost. Sometimes, this involves ... innovative solutions. Minneapolis-based Abbott Northwestern Hospital is one of these innovators. Using iPhones, [medical] residents record the results of portable ultrasounds and interpretations of every exam they perform through a custom app ...created using FileMaker, a database software company, as a platform. These exam records are sent wirelessly back to a central database, where a physician double-checks them. The combination of [the FileMaker Go] portable app and centralized exam record database review ensure quality of treatment [for the patient]."
Aug 12, 2013 - "FileMaker Go... should now be considered must-have mobile database software among desktop FileMaker Pro users. The database program's excellent design, multiple file layouts, integrated search, digital signature capture, and charting capabilities made it a compelling offer when it debuted, but FileMaker Go 12 ups the ante with enhanced multimedia capabilities, multitasking support, and best of all a new price: Free! "

In the past, researchers gathered evaluation data using pens and paper and manually tallied and entered the data into separate Excel spreadsheets, which were then uploaded to the database for analysis and report generation. The tedious process was time consuming and at risk of data entry errors. As the number of schools participating in the program increased, so did the need for a more streamlined process. The Center for Disabilities Studies partnered with IT Solutions to create a custom FileMaker-based system for the project's main database. Once that was in place, they created a mobile app that syncs to and from the the main database on the FileMaker Go platform."

He finds that "FileMaker (Go, Pro, and Server) are incredible tools for pulling together all of the disparate data that teachers are expected to use to drive instruction in their classrooms. Even if you don't have the time or resources to build your information systems within FileMaker, there are plenty of developers and vendors with solutions built in FileMaker (and who can host the server end of things) that bring a variety of tools and benefits to the education vertical. Not the least of these benefits is the Go App that makes data collection, reporting, and interpretation particularly easy for teachers and administrators."

Conversely, if we made a design change on a query, form or report, the change would get pushed down to all devices running Go immediately. The responsiveness in the speed of updates pretty much eliminates version control concerns, as every instance is always looking at the current version."
