Create Better Layouts with FileMaker Pro Alignment Tools

One of the keys to attractive, usable layouts is keeping things neat and orderly. You should make a point of consistently sizing and aligning your fields, text, and other layout objects. One way FileMaker Pro attempts to help you be a brilliant interface designer is by using Object Grids, a feature that "snaps" layout objects to the nearest point on an invisible grid. Object Grids is toggled from the Arrange menu (visible only in Layout Mode). Helpful as it may be, however, Object Grids is a blunt instrument. When you need fine control over the placement of your layout objects, it's time to turn off Object Grids and start using alignment tools.

Deleting a File on Your Hard Drive

I’ve always wanted to be able to create a directory or folder on the local hard drive from within a FileMaker file. Products like the Troi File Plug-in www.troi.com are able to easily perform this task but it’s always nice to have FileMaker only options that don’t require licensing a third party product. The big road block to storing a folder in FileMaker are the limitations of a Container field. Container fields can only store files. The workaround is to compress an empty folder into .zip or .sit file. This file can then be inserted into a Container field using the File... menu item from the Insert menu. Once the compressed folder is stored in the Container field, a script using variables can export the folder wherever you desire.
