Tips and tricks

Understand Find Symbols
Discover some shortcuts to streamline your searches.

Regular finds are terrific for a solid majority of your database searching needs, but there are many situations where they just aren't enough. When you need to find records that don't match very specific queries like "Smith," find symbols are your ticket.

OK, so, what are find symbols anyway? They're special characters that you enter as part of your find request that cause FileMaker to search the data in special ways. Whenever you enter Find mode, they're sitting over there in the Status Area to the left, just waiting for you to click the Symbols button and try them out.

Wildcard
Let's start with the classic wildcard search. An asterisk in a find request will act as a wildcard character, matching any combination of zero or more characters. For example, if you have a field called Month in your database where you store the full name of the month, performing a find for *ember will return records with the values September, November, and December, but not October or any other month. Think of the asterisk as a placeholder for any given string of text.

Ranges
Another very useful symbol is the ellipsis, which is used to search for ranges. In a find request, type in the low value, the ellipsis (three periods will work, too), and the high value. FileMaker will return all records within the range you specified.

Say your database has a field indicating how much money each person has donated to your charity and you want to know who has donated more than $99 but less than $1,000. In Find mode, enter 100999 into the donation field and FileMaker Pro will return all records with values from 100 to 999 inclusive. Ranges work with dates, too. If you want to search for all records with dates from May through September, enter Find Mode and type 1/5/20059/30/2005 to find the desired records. With dates, be sure to use four digit years to ensure you're searching the correct year or years. This covers just a couple of Find symbols. Next time, you'll learn about the rest!
