Alexei Folger (FileMaker, Inc.)

Session Description One of the great strengths of FileMaker Pro software is its ability to share data with other applications. Not only can FileMaker Pro make its own data available, via technologies compatible with Open Database Connectivity (ODBC), it can access data stored in other systems as well. This session covers some of the ways in which FileMaker Pro can share data using ODBC, a database interchange technology. Using ODBC, you can import data from sources, such as SQL databases, into your FileMaker Pro solution. Likewise, you can make data from your FileMaker Pro solution available to other programs that use ODBC. The session will also cover connecting through the External SQL Sources (ESS) feature in FileMaker Pro, where you can directly access certain kinds of SQL-based data directly from within a FileMaker Pro system. Attending this session will help prepare you for the FileMaker certification test in regard to Connectivity questions.  Note: An additional fee is required for all FTS sessions. Attendees will receive one DVD of the FTS materials for one or more sessions (includes modules, videos, exercise and demo files).

iCal 3:15 p.m. Using the Toolbar to Add Power and Functionality to Your Solutions Session - Design/Develop Intermediate
John Sindelar (SeedCode)

Session Description As developers we've spent a lot of time hiding and locking the status toolbar so our users would use our scripts and our navigation. But what if we could let them use the toolbar and shortcuts they're already used to yet still have the behave way we want? As FileMaker continues to use the toolbar as a platform for delivering new features (Saved Finds & Quick Find for example), our users are going to begin demanding we leave it visible. We'll explore a number of creative techniques, beyond just using custom menus, to show how the toolbar can be the best part of your new UI.

  • FileMaker Pro 11 Advanced

What You Will Learn

  • Learn how to leverage functionality already in the toolbar without having to rewrite your own versions of all those functions.
  • Selectively remap toolbar commands with custom menus and script triggers to "Let FileMaker be FileMaker", just a little bit better.
  • Transform the layout menu into a rich navigation engine: one that respects FileMaker's built in security.
  • See how the status tool bar can go from something you hide to one of the most useful parts of your UI.

iCal 3:15 p.m. Working with HL7 Data: Tools and Techniques Workshop - Integration/Web Intermediate
Kevin Cunningham (KCunning Consulting)

Session Description HL7 is the data standard for medical data, and it's a bear! While there's been an XML-based version in the works for years, the text-based version created decades ago still holds sway almost everywhere. So what is HL7 and how do you work with it? This session walks you through a systematic way to approach working with HL7 data; understanding it, acquiring it, parsing it, importing/exporting it, and incorporating it into your solution. We'll discuss the main problems you'll face, the decisions you'll need to make, and provide several tools to help you "do it yourself."

iCal 3:15 p.m. The Best of Both Worlds -- Bringing a FileMaker User Experience to the Web, and Vice Versa Session - Integration/Web Advanced
Chris Hansen (Nifty Technologies)

Session Description Somewhat justifiably, FileMaker developers often view Web interfaces as an inferior choice or simply a necessary evil. While FileMaker certainly puts an abundance of interface tools at developers' fingertips, the Web has much to offer in its own right; many of those offerings are often freely available as libraries. Developers can even make their Web solutions nearly as responsive as a native application. Best of all, this functionality need not add excessive time to development. Furthermore, thanks to the availability of Web Viewer controls in FileMaker Pro, these same libraries can be used to bring additional functionality within FileMaker itself.

  • FileMaker Server
  • FileMaker Pro
  • HTML
  • CSS
  • JavaScript
  • jQuery and other libraries

What You Will Learn

  • Using JavaScript (including AJAX) to give users a more "FileMaker" like experience via the Web
  • Overview and examples of available libraries to add functionality like Drag-and-Drop, Pickers, etc.
  • Available methods and examples of using templates to minimize "busy work" on the Web side
  • The use of Web Viewers in FileMaker to easily bring web functionality into FileMaker
