Top Notch Layout Design for FileMaker Desktop |
Session - Design/Develop Track |
Intermediate |
|
Matt Petrowsky (ISO Productions, Inc.)

This session will focus more on the aesthetics and what details you need to know in order to achieve that top notch look.
What You Will Learn
- How to fully leverage Layout mode in FileMaker Pro
- Designing a layout for speed as well as looks
- What makes a FileMaker Pro layout look great

CRUD Fundamentals and FileMaker Pro |
Session - Design/Develop Track |
Intermediate |
|
Michael Phillips (NYHTC)
Session Description
The vast majority of scripts and script steps we write on a daily basis fall into the same few categories of operations - Create, Read, Update and Delete (CRUD). The concept of basic CRUD functionality is common in web development, but hasn't been embraced by the FileMaker community as a useful tool in the FileMaker developer's toolbox.
In this session we will explore an example of a fully portable, plug and play CRUD script. We'll demonstrate how this one centralized script has cut down significantly on the number of script steps, table occurrences and layouts based on external tables, and has enabled a much more consistent scripting environment for a multi-developer shop.
NOTE: If you are planning to attend this session, then you may want to consider also attending the earlier session, "Scripts as Functions: Using Structured I/O For Reusable Scripts." The concepts presented in the earlier session will help you get the most from this one.
Products & Technologies
- Six Fried Rice dictionary custom functions
- Fabrice Nordmann's FM_Name_ID custom function
What You Will Learn
- How to cut down on script steps
- How to utilize the CRUD script to enable a more consistent development environment
- How to use the Six Fried Rice custom functions for parameters

Make your calculations function for you by being cleanly written, well-documented, and useful.

Design For Offline: Building FileMaker Go Apps That Work When The Internet Doesn't |
Session - FileMaker Go |
Advanced |
|
Todd Geist (geist interactive)
Session Description
FileMaker Go embodies a unique blend of ease of use, flexibility, and power that allows it to reach places its desktop-bound predecessors never could. We have helped our clients build applications that need to work in basements, in trucks driving down rural back roads, on constructions sites, and in remote villages in Africa. These applications have to work even when the internet doesn't.
Our work with these clients taught us that the data exchange method is only one small piece of the puzzle. In this session we will review a selection of these methods and focus on the other pieces such as, workflow, schema design, and lean data sets. If you "design for offline," whatever method you choose for exchanging data will be easier and more robust.
Products & Technologies
- FileMaker Go
- FileMaker Pro
What You Will Learn
- Some methods for exchanging data with the server
- How to reduce or eliminate the potential for record edit conflicts
- How to design your database schema to simplify the data exchange problem
- How to keep your mobile solution lean, mean and tightly focused

Wim Decorte (Soliant Consulting)
Session Description
FileMaker Server 12 brings us a whole new backup mechanism in the form of Progressive Backups and that brings the total number of backup mechanisms to three. The regular scheduled backup feature has also been massively overhauled to minimize backup time. And the trusty old pause/copy/resume technique now needs to take into account that container data can be stored outside the FileMaker files. Given that backups are a cornerstone of a workable Disaster Recover strategy, this is the session to catch up on all things related to backups and the new FileMaker Server 12 features.
Products & Technologies
- FileMaker Pro 12

What You Will Learn
- What are the 3 backup mechanisms that FileMaker Server offer?
- What is the ideal mix of those 3 for a good Disaster Recovery strategy?
