Michael Phillips (NYHTC)
Session Description

With the advent of Script Parameters and Exit Script results, modern FileMaker scripts can now assume a powerful, function-like role in which they receive data for processing from a calling script, and return transformed data or error messages back to the caller. But there is no real convention or best practice in regards to how to pass in secure, easily referenced script parameters, or return easily parsed results. In this session we will explore common do-it-yourself strategies for managing parameters and return results, as well as custom functions that are freely available to the FileMaker community which can add more power and precision to the way your scripts process parameters and return results.

What You Will Learn
  • How to build structured arrays of parameters
  • How to reference those parameters in scripts
  • How to continue building functionality with the parameters
  • How structured parameters can enable us to write more universal and reusable scripts

  • Identify WHO you should be selling to
  • Identify a systematic process that enables you to confidently move from initial inquiry to approved project

Session Description

The best dashboards put information at your user's fingertips. Most dashboards use charts or graphs to distill data into a visual form that can drive decision making. But just putting charts on your database's splash screen doesn't give users a great experience. Data should be well chosen, easy to grasp and most important, easily actionable. Plus managers who make long-term decisions will need different data and a different type of dashboard than the staff members who are in the trenches doing day-to-day tasks. Learn how to ask and answer the questions that lead to a great UX for your dashboard driven database.

It's easy to extend the capabilities of FileMaker Pro on the desktop by using any of the many third-party plug-ins that are available for developers. In FileMaker Go, however, plug-ins are prohibited by the iOS platform's more restrictive security policies. This session will focus on the use of the url protocol for communicating with apps outside of FileMake, as well as leveraging SASE (Server Assisted Script Execution) to enhance external integration with FileMaker Go. Examples for SASE include a real-world case of credit card processing, using a server plugin and reservations submitted to Authorize.net's CIM (Contact Information Manager) to avoid PCI compliance issues. Session Description

FileMaker Pro has a very powerful calculation engine built into it. The calculation engine is exposed to us in a number of ways: calculation fields, script steps, conditional formatting, filtered portals, web viewers, chart objects, etc. But it can be a challenge to determine precisely when various kinds of calculations will refresh, and what causes them to refresh. This fast-paced session is a survey of the various places where the calculation engine is exposed to us, and an exploration of what exactly causes calculations to refresh their values, and when. Audience participation will be encouraged.

Matthew O'Dell (FileMaker, Inc.)
Session Description

One of the most important and powerful tools in FileMaker Pro is the Manage Scripts feature, which allows you to create scripted routines that can then be triggered in a variety of ways. Scripts can serve a wide range of purposes, including automating everything from simple navigation tasks to complex reporting and workflow needs. Despite their variety of purposes, there are common design patterns-sequences or arrangements of script steps-that serve as the building blocks for script after script. This session will cover some of these basic design patterns such as interacting with the user, finding data, error trapping, navigating to related records, and looping over a set of records. By focusing on these common patterns, you will learn the building blocks necessary for creating scripts in your own database solutions. Note: A Gold Pass is required for all FTS sessions. Attendees will receive one DVD of the FTS materials (includes modules, videos, exercise and demo files).
