FTS Intermediate

Kristy Lapidus (Soliant Consulting)

Session Description

Scripting is a major artery in any FileMaker system due largely to the fact that it allows you to automate laborious and time-consuming manual processes. Despite the plethora of possible processes worthy of automation there are common design patterns - sequences or arrangements of script steps - that serve as the building blocks for script after script. Examples of these design patterns include interacting with the user, finding data, error trapping, navigating to related records, and looping over a set of records. By focusing on the common patterns, you will learn the building blocks necessary for creating scripts in your own database solutions.

Note: A Gold Pass is required for all FTS sessions. Attendees will receive one DVD of the FTS materials (includes modules, videos, exercise and demo files).

Save to Calendar There's a World Outside my FileMaker - Web Services for the Masses
2:00 p.m.
Integration/Web Intermediate

Stephen (Steve) Winter (Matatiro Solutions)

Session Description

Many organizations offer web services. These can be used to access information and perform CRUD operations on their databases. They could also be as simple as receiving current exchange rates, or as complex as performing multiple shipping requests. During this session we'll begin with simple SOAP-based services which can be accessed using plug-ins to retrieve information. From there we move on to look at creating your own web services (again using plug-ins) to make your FileMaker scripts accessible 'from anywhere'. While plug-ins make it easy to deploy web services, sometimes for complex b2b-type solutions this isn't enough, at which point CWP comes to the rescue, and we will explore ways in which you can interact with more complex remote services or where there are additional requirements. Finally, we'll look at ways in which you can use FileMaker scripting to access non-SOAP based XML web services.

Todd Geist (geist interactive)

Session Description

Code reuse is a central tenant to application design. We need methodologies that allow us to share our code within our solutions and amongst our fellow developers. We need to spend less time rewriting or copying and pasting code, and more time building new features for our solutions. We'll pick up where last year's "Reusable" session left off. We'll take a look at some new examples of how to make our code smart enough to figure out what it needs to do, and how to give other developers clear and easy ways to reuse your code. Finally, we will propose some simple conventions to organize FileMaker code into identifiable modules.
