Alexei Folger (Outside Edge Consulting)

Session Description

Implementing a proper security model only begins with controlling whether or not someone can log into a database. FileMaker Pro includes a robust set of features for controlling which users have access to what information and what they can do with that information via the accounts and privileges settings. This session will provide a comprehensive overview of FileMaker's security model and demonstrate how to restrict users from particular operations or information within a database, how to associate privileges with authenticated accounts, and how to control specific features within a database based on a given user's assigned privileges.

What you should know

FileMaker basics, including calculations.

Pre-con

Doug Gardner (Exoteric Inc.)

Session Description

FileMaker has the most powerful, plain language scripting capabilities of any database application, and as you learn to master scripts you are learning to master FileMaker. This session will introduce a range of simple concepts that are fundamental to scripting including: branching scripts; centrally controlled vs. chained scripts; particular vs. universal scripting solutions and why the latter affords scripting modularity which in turn allows for script portability. We will look at how context is important to scripts in FileMaker 13, how to break down functional requirements into a series of script steps, and debugging methods for when we run into trouble. These concepts are illustrated by building simple scripts that are combined to produce more complex scripts, all of which can be adapted to a variety of common tasks.

What you should know

A basic familiarity with setting up tables, fields and layouts in FileMaker Pro.
