Save to Calendar Design Without a Designer: How It’s So Not About You
2:00 PM
Design

Albert Harum-Alvarez (SmallCo.)

Session Description

Design has become “A Thing.” Maybe too much so! Maybe way too self-conscious. How can we design without making it all about the design, and therefore about us? This session is full of fresh new FileMaker design work, using the latest version of FileMaker, that shows how to get it right, how to design so well that your clients don’t even have to think about what they’re doing. We will also focus on the looming perils of overusing the latest goodies on the FileMaker Platform. When should we—and when shouldn’t we—use the shiny new features of FileMaker?

What you should know

Basic knowledge of FileMaker Pro is assumed.

Products & Technologies
  • FileMaker Pro
  • FileMaker Pro Advanced
  • FileMaker Go
  • FileMaker WebDirect
What You Will Learn
  • Design as part of a balanced breakfast—not eye candy
  • Specifying goals before functionality
  • Entities in your app have names and faces—but only if you design them! Examples of “building a face”
  • Real apps that get it right, and how they did it

Chih Hsiao (FileMaker, Inc.)

Session Description

How do designers make usability decisions? What is the definition of Ease of Use? This session aims to demystify the mechanical and artistic aspects of design using metaphors from other creative forms to help identify the goals, variables and constraints in designing software interfaces. Chih will use real world examples to illustrate the key decision points and trade-offs in a project cycle and introduce design concepts and practices that challenge conventional approaches to user experience design.

What you should know

No previous knowledge in design required.

Ibrahim Bittar (Eikonsys, S.A. de C.V.)

Session Description

Usually when we refer to a solution as “foolproof,” many people believe that it’s a solution so easy that even a fool could use it. This session is not about fooling people, it’s about people making mistakes. A foolproof solution is one that predicts input and workflow errors and makes sure that those errors are not made. In this session, you’ll learn to identify the most common errors people make and how to prevent them in a simple and elegant way by using the tools we already know and some of the new tools provided by FileMaker 14.

What you should know

Basic knowledge of calculation fields, scripting, and layout creation

Products & Technologies
  • FileMaker Pro
  • FileMaker Pro Advanced
  • FileMaker WebDirect
What You Will Learn
  • Identify common input errors caused by poor interface design
  • How to prevent common errors
  • How to combine graphic design and scripting to help your users
  • To use the new features in FileMaker

Albert Harum-Alvarez (SmallCo.)

Session Description

Sometimes our longest-running clients know the least about what the FileMaker Platform can do today. Their legacy solution is groaning under its own weight, and there’s nothing lightweight or mobile about their current deployment strategy. How can we best show them what FileMaker can do today, without rewriting their entire solution? In this session, we’ll discuss a strategy that is simple and proven: make small changes to core schema, don’t touch existing layouts, scripts, business rules and workflow. Lastly, design focused, elegant mobile solutions for the highest value people in the business; high-value folks are often under-served by a legacy solution.

What you should know

It’s best if the attendee has already experienced the pain of staring a major FileMaker rewrite right in the eyes. But there are no technical pre-requisites for this session.

Products & Technologies
  • FileMaker Pro
  • FileMaker Pro Advanced
  • FileMaker Go
  • FileMaker Server
  • FileMaker WebDirect
What You Will Learn
  • Simple changes that can help even overly “thick” data tables to be mobile-ready
  • The business case for helping the under-served “high value” people in a business
  • Why small, read-only mobile solutions often help a business more than a comprehensive rewrite
  • How a tightly-scoped project aimed at high-level staff can grease the wheels for the next, bigger work phase

Brian Schick (Beezwax)

Session Description

Increasingly, savvy users and enterprises want more than the traditional data-centered solutions. They want apps that are tied into the software they use at work. FileMaker is a fantastic platform for creating and delivering apps. But to take full advantage of FileMaker’s power, we need to better understand how apps differ from conventional solutions: How does an app look and feel differently than a traditional Mac and PC UI?  What questions should we ask ourselves and our users if we’re designing an app? What features should we emphasize — and leave out — as we develop apps? This session will provide core techniques, concrete examples, and best practices for delivering best-of-breed apps users will love. Best of all, attendees will learn to identify and bring to life potential apps hidden in their existing solutions.

What you should know

All attendees with curiosity and a desire to improve their user interface and user experience (UI/UX) techniques are welcome. Although we’ll explore advanced UI/UX concepts, no prior knowledge is assumed. Key concepts will be clearly explained as they’re introduced, and visual examples will be given to demonstrate all key concepts.

Session Description

Everyone is unique, but most humans share similar basic psychology and cognitive abilities. Understanding how design is affected by the capabilities and limitations of the human mind is key to designing more effective interactions and user interfaces. This session will cover a number of features of perception, learning and behavior, and how they influence or are affected by design decisions. You will learn practical skills you can apply to improve your user’s experiences.
