FileMaker: Tell us more about yourself.

  • Oscar Santos

Santos: I am 26 years old. Since January 2009, I have been with Proyección Logística Agencia Aduanal, a customs broker regulating the import of goods into and out of Mexico. The company has about 50 employees, with offices in Laredo, Texas, as well as Nuevo Laredo, Monterrey, México DF, Veracruz and Manzanillo, Mexico. We manage imports and exports of many types of goods such as car filters and motor parts for the automobile industry.

FileMaker: How does your business operate?

  • Oscar Santos

Santos: It is very document-intensive. Just on the sales side, we must track documents needed from customers, including photographs, interactions, and reminders, as well as new prospect status. We also have prospecting and new customer indexes for sales reps, documentation of feedback given to sales reps and so on.

FileMaker: How did you become interested in FileMaker?

  • Oscar Santos
I started as a sales representative. As I was growing with the company, my boss noticed that I had strong Microsoft Excel skills and a sense for how to organize information to solve business problems. We started creating solutions to automate various processes in our office.

    FileMaker: What happened next?

  • Oscar Santos

Santos: I was still in the sales department, but I was starting to manage large databases, using Navicat to perform queries in order to get the information we needed. The focus was to create metrics for employee performance and general productivity in processing customs requests. We were using Microsoft Excel macros to create spreadsheets that only partially met company expectations.

FileMaker: Why did you choose FileMaker?

  • Oscar Santos

Santos: We needed software that was easier than clunky spreadsheets. My boss considered Microsoft Access, but we’re all Mac users so that was not a choice. I searched online for databases for Mac, and found FileMaker. I saw that FileMaker has a great reputation. The comments users made about FileMaker were very positive, and it offered the possibility to easily create iPhone and iPad apps. Overall, it really looked great!

FileMaker: How long did it take you to get up and running with FileMaker and what training did you use?

  • Oscar Santos

Santos: I studied FileMaker via web sessions with Accelerate Computer Training. It took me 10 months to create a usable solution for the sales department, from my last training session to the implementation. It has over 35 layouts and 100 scripts, and it is synchronized to FileMaker Servers hosting users in Mexico City and Monterrey.

FileMaker: How has your skill in FileMaker affected your career?

  • Oscar Santos

Santos: When working in sales, I discovered an aptitude for solving business problems. FileMaker skills turned my newfound talent into a more fulfilling, lucrative career. It has been rewarding to positively affect my company’s operations. I am now a more competitive employee due to my database knowledge. FileMaker has helped me grow along with the company. They know that I am a valuable person, and it feels good.

FileMaker: What other benefits are you finding from FileMaker development?

  • Oscar Santos

Santos: I’m making a better income, with an immediate 20 percent increase in pay. But to me, the most important thing is not my current income – it’s what’s next. For example, we are about to start working on an important initiative for our main offices. The new FileMaker solution is projected to save the company about $4,000 USD monthly. I get part of that amount for making a difference in the business. That is the kind of income impact I am looking for.

What has been your most compelling FileMaker project to date?

  • Oscar Santos

Santos: I am creating a solution to keep track of every aspect of the export process in the Nuevo Laredo office. I set up an ODBC connection with the database in our office in Laredo, Texas. It has helped a lot in measuring the export team metrics, which we previously tracked on a white board that could be erased at any moment. When I finish this, the time everyone spends tracking goods will be a fraction compared to what they are spending now. We will have full visibility into movement of goods through customs, as well as delivery times, efficiency of moving freight and more.

FileMaker skills turned my newfound talent into a more fulfilling, lucrative career. It has been rewarding to positively affect my company’s operations.
