What are Script Triggers?

Script Triggers in FileMaker Pro allow you to automatically run scripts based on user actions like clicking a button, entering a field, or inputting data. And all it takes is a couple of clicks to add a Script Trigger (+) to an object. You’ll be able to avoid data entry errors, automate database tasks and simplify the design of your solution.

A world of possibilities

There are 15 predefined Script Triggers that can be used on layouts, fields, buttons, portals, tabs, or a Web Viewer. Several Script Triggers can even be linked together to run based on a single event. The possibilities are endless!

Automatically run scripts based on a variety of actions such as these:

• After a field is entered
• When typing into a field
• When exiting a layout*
• After a value is changed
• Before an object is validated*
• Before data is saved
• Before exiting a field
• When a layout becomes active
• Before characters are typed into an active layout
• When navigating from record to record
• Before a record is committed
• When an uncommitted record is changed back to its original value
• When changing between list, form or table view*
• When changing from Browse, Preview or Find mode

Script Triggers in action

There are numerous ways you can benefit from using Script Triggers. Expedite data entry by automatically advancing to the next field or switching to a new layout. Prevent errors by auto-correcting data entered or limiting data entry to just letters or numbers. Make your databases more secure by adding Script Triggers that automatically close a layout due to inactivity. Display only credit card number and expiration date fields if someone selects “Credit Card” as the payment type. Or if you work in a multi-lingual environment, have data entry forms automatically display in the language selected from a drop-down list.
