Upgrading from FileMaker 8.5, 8, or 7

When you upgrade from FileMaker 8.5, 8 or 7** today, you'll get up to three versions' worth of new and improved features because you'll get all the new features in FileMaker 9 plus all the features of FileMaker Pro 8.5 and 8. See the Version Comparison Chart.

Upgrading takes just a few minutes, because database formats haven't changed from FileMaker Pro 7. So you'll just install the FileMaker software, and then open your existing database without changing a thing. FileMaker Mobile 8 upgrades are available only from the FileMaker Store as a download with optional CD and FileMaker Order Center as a Retail Box product. Volume license customers may order from their preferred reseller or from FileMaker Volume License Sales, which can be reached at 800-725-2747.

Upgrading from FileMaker 6 or earlier versions

If you are using FileMaker 6, 5.5, 5.0, 4.1, 4.0 or earlier versions, you could be getting so much more done in so much less time with FileMaker Pro 9. See the Version Comparison Chart. Licensed users of FileMaker 6 and earlier versions are not eligible for the upgrade price and must pay full price. FileMaker does not offer technical support for FileMaker 6 or earlier versions. Once you have installed FileMaker 9, please read Converting FileMaker Databases from Previous Versions to determine if you are converting simple solutions or more advanced solutions.

Education Pricing Eligibility

Am I eligible for education pricing?

FileMaker, Inc. offers qualified education institutions, organizations, and end users the opportunity to purchase education versions of FileMaker products for administrative or educational instruction purposes. Education versions of FileMaker products cannot be used for any commercial purpose. A commercial purpose is any revenue-generating activity beyond the usual and customary activities educational institutions engage in. Please note that education programs and prices are subject to change without notice. Education institutions and organizations must meet at least one of the following criteria to qualify:

  1. Accredited public or private universities, colleges, and community colleges that grant degrees requiring at least two years of full-time matriculation*
  2. Accredited public and private K-12 Institutions including Charter and Virtual Schools*
  3. Hospitals, libraries, research laboratories, and museums wholly-owned and operated by the schools above
  4. State Departments of Education, administrative offices, boards of education, and county offices of education
  5. Home schools approved by FileMaker at its sole discretion

* Either institutionally accredited by an accrediting agency nationally recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education or, recognized by the Department of Education of the State in which it is located. Students are eligible for education pricing only if they attend an accredited school described above, and provided that the software is only used by the student.

Which institutions do not qualify as an education institution or organization?

The following institutions or organizations do not qualify:

  1. Non-accredited schools
  2. Federal, state, and local government organizations
  3. Military academies that do not offer an academic degree

Non-Profit Pricing Eligibility

FileMaker offers Non-Profit pricing through Volume Licensing only. Non-profit organizations with current proof of 501(c)3 non-profit status are eligible to purchase under the Non-Profit Volume License Agreement (NPVLA). Universal Applications

FileMaker Pro 9, FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced, FileMaker Server 9, and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced are Universal applications. FileMaker will allow customers to use both a Mac and Windows version of FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Pro Advanced on a single Intel-based Mac computer running Boot Camp even though the customer only has a single license to use FileMaker Pro.

This applies only to Intel-based Macs running dual boot Windows & Mac. It does not change any of our other restrictions.

For example:

  1. If you have a Windows machine with dual boot capability (to boot into several copies of Windows) you would require multiple licenses of FileMaker Pro.
  2. If you have a single FileMaker database you want to access from two Windows Machines, you would require two licenses of FileMaker Pro
  3. If you have a single FileMaker database hosted on a desktop machine and you want to access from a laptop machine, you would require two licenses of FileMaker Pro
  4. If you have a single Windows or Mac machine running virtualization software and you want to run two licenses concurrently on the same machine in two virtual partitions, you would require two licenses FileMaker Pro.

Support

All Single License products and Volume Licensing Orders include one technical support access code for technical support regarding installation and configuration, to ask how to use a feature or for troubleshooting help. Training, consulting, solution design and other services are not included. Toll and connection charges apply.

You may order additional technical support services. All FileMaker licensed users have access to a broad range of support packages and prices to suit a variety of customer needs. Volume license customers receive a 20% discount on Priority Support when it is purchased on the same order as your licenses.

Media (CDs and Documentation)

Retail boxes include CDs (which include the software product and electronic documentation) as well as printed documentation. Refer to the box for the list of documentation.

Single License download orders and Volume Licensing orders include the software product and electronic documentation as PDF files. CDs and printed manuals are available at an additional charge.

Downgrades

FileMaker gives all customers the right to purchase licenses of FileMaker Pro 9 but install an earlier version of FileMaker.

Example #1:

You've purchased 15 FileMaker Pro 9 New (not upgrade) licenses and previously purchased 25 FileMaker Pro 7 licenses. You can install up to 40 licenses of FileMaker Pro - 15 licenses of FileMaker Pro 9 and 25 licenses of FileMaker Pro 7, OR 40 licenses of FileMaker Pro 7, OR any combination of FileMaker Pro 9 licenses (not to exceed 15) and FileMaker Pro 7 licenses.

Example #2:

You've purchased 15 FileMaker Pro 9 Upgrade licenses and previously purchased 25 FileMaker Pro 7 licenses. You can install up to 25 copies of FileMaker Pro of which only 15 can be FileMaker Pro 9.

Licensed users of FileMaker 9 may purchase a copy of the FileMaker 7, 8 or 8.5 media disks by contacting Customer Assistance at 800-325-2747. Licensing customers may purchase CDs and printed manuals at an additional charge.

Electronic Software Delivery

FileMaker products are now available via download for same day delivery at no additional fee.

It's as fast & easy as 1-2-3. Here's how it works:

  1. Choose "Download" instead of "CD-ROM" when placing your order on the FileMaker Store.
  2. Open the Order Confirmation email containing a link to a unique web page specific to your order.
  3. Download your software and installation license key(s), and you'll have everything you need to get up and running quickly with your FileMaker software.

If you'd like to have a back-up CD sent to you as well, please select the option "Download w/CD-ROM" - during your purchase so you'll have your software on CD should you ever need to reinstall FileMaker.

*The Family Pack Software License Agreement allows you to install and use one copy of the Bento Software on up to a maximum of five (5) Apple-labeled computers at a time as long as those computers are located in the same household and used by persons who occupy that same household. By “household” we mean a person or persons sharing the same housing unit such as a home, apartment, mobile home or condominium. This license does not extend to students who reside at a separate on-campus location or to business or commercial users.
