Arizona Behavioral Health Associates has a specific mission -- to guide people through difficult periods of their lives and to help them make the changes they need to make. Co-directors Della S. Lusk, Ph.D. and Lee Lusk, M.A. head up a staff of specialists with training in counseling children, adolescents, families and individuals, along with biofeedback and stress-management. Headquartered in Flagstaff, ABHA treats clients from all over northern Arizona, and provides the authorized Domestic Violence Treatment Program for Coconino County. It's a busy practice -- with significant information-management demands.

And as it has for more than a decade, FileMaker Pro keeps the office running smoothly. "We've been using FileMaker since 1992," comments managing director Lee Lusk. "Our database is used for comprehensive management of all pertinent client data, including billing, recordkeeping, and data management. We needed a secure, flexible system tailored to our individual needs. FileMaker Pro met those requirements."

Systems like ABHA needed don't come ready-made in a box -- they need to be specifically designed to meet the jobs at hand. And that's where FileMaker Pro really makes a difference. "FileMaker eliminates the need to use mass market software that isn't customizable," Lee continues. "We've developed a range of inhouse custom FileMaker Pro databases to keep track of all aspects of patient data. Our core application relies on 20 to 30 individual databases that are relationally linked, with a total of more than 15,000 individual records. This system will specifically help us to meet compliance requirements set by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act."

Portability makes a difference in databases as well as insurance -- and FileMaker Mobile allows ABHA's team of five specialists to make entries and update information on the road, using Handspring Treo 180g handheld units to interface data gathered in the field. In the office or anywhere their duties take them, ABHA's professionals keep vital information up to date. When interviews are completed, when outdated information needs to be changed on the run, it's a snap to gather, store, and then upload the necessary data. Nothing's ever obsolete, nothing's ever out of date, nothing ever falls through the cracks.

And that's as perfect a practice as you can ever hope to find.
