Business Challenge
NewSouth Books is a highly organized publishing company where a small staff handles a multitude of tasks. Managing Editor Brian Seidman says staying organized is imperative, as is ensuring every employee has access to the latest information. "We use FileMaker databases to store data on our contacts, book titles, sales, and inventory, among others," he says, "and FileMaker makes it easy for us to manage this information and keep track of how this information interrelates."
Brian is pleased with the new look and feel. "I was impressed with how much bigger and brighter everything is in FileMaker Pro10. FileMaker has always been a database program that allowed non–programmers to create their own databases with ease, and the new icons and toolbars have a very comforting feel. It's a big step forward in terms of accessibility and out–of–the–box deployment."
Brian also has high praise for the new toolbar and themes. "The new toolbar makes completing our everyday FileMaker tasks much easier. Instead of having to use layout space for saving a record as a PDF or sending an email, we can add an icon to the toolbar and it's always there. The new FileMaker themes also help us to create welcoming workspaces where our employees can feel comfortable working with the databases; FileMaker Pro 10 definitely takes the 'scary' out of database management!"
As are many other developers, Brian is very enthusiastic about the new ability to install Script Triggers into layouts. "While managing a large customer database, one issue our company struggles with is eliminating repeated records," he says. "The ability to install script triggers into layouts goes a long way toward helping us prevent duplicate records and creating a cleaner and more effective database. Script Triggers can help us be more circumspect in our data entry, enhancing our productivity overall."
