By the Book
Building and life safety codes, electrical codes, codes of all kinds governing safe practice. These are the bulwarks of public safety, and keeping these codes current is the responsibility of the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association). It's a job that gets done with help from FileMaker Pro, the award-winning database software application from FileMaker Inc.
Business Challenge
Committees of voluntary experts in the building, electrical, and numerous other trades are responsible for drafting and updating these vital documents known as the National Fire Codes -- over three hundred individual codes of safe practice. "FileMaker Pro is used in 30 databases to manage information on codes, committees, and individual committee members, " explains IS Consultant Joe Scarpetta. "And FileMaker Pro is also used as the front end for publishing our Proposals and Comments through Adobe InDesign."Successful Solution
And that's what's getting Joe excited about the new FileMaker Pro 6 -- because its XML Export function will greatly simplify the task of readying the new codes for publication. "XML Export will give me advantages in the future," he declares. "I'll be able to output lists and definitions that are currently managed manually. Instead I'll be able to use XML to get these into .rtf format and then into the publishing package."Customer Benefits
Joe's primary interest in test-driving FileMaker Pro 6 is its XML capabilities, but he's also taken a look at some of its other features. "Format Painter is huge!" he declares. "Not having to go back and forth within Layout mode to change attributes is a really big step."Safety codes evolve with the times -- and the National Fire Protection Association evolves with them, making good use of the latest features of FileMaker Pro!
