More Time to Teach

How can educators find more time to teach? Maryland's Caroline County Public Schools (CCPS) system solved this problem with FileMaker Pro, award winning database software from FileMaker, Inc.

With 10 schools and 5,600 students, CCPS is one of Maryland's smallest but most advanced school systems when it comes to deploying information technology to save time and improve principal, staff, and teacher productivity. Using FileMaker Pro to manage its intranet is a shining example.

'All administrative, student, and auxiliary information has been converted to FileMaker Pro and is now available anytime, on demand which is a real time saver when you are trying to get your hands on information quickly,' says Wayne Wiley, supervisor of instructional technology with CCPS.

CCPS' staff of 600 use FileMaker Pro predominantly for the Mac OS to access via an AppleTalk intranet more than 220 FileMaker databases -- some with more than 20,000 records that house:
* administrative data such as policy manuals, curriculum guides and technology maintenance requests
* student data including emergency contact information, test data and grades
* auxiliary data such as special education, student management and planning information

Some pieces of CCPS' intranet meant for public knowledge, such as the curriculum, are even linked to the web using Lasso, a CGI product from Blueworld.

'Using FileMaker Pro, we've been able to shorten the time for delivering service and support across our district, provide accurate and up to date information quickly to all staff and more effectively provide instructions and tailored solutions for our teachers,' says Wiley.
