Scientific Applications & Research Associates (SARA), Inc., was formed in 1989 to harness the creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit of engineers and scientists. An employee-owned company, SARA has nearly 100 innovative scientists and engineers conducting research and development for government, military and industrial clients.
SARA used FileMaker Pro software to develop a comprehensive ERP package that enables the company to electronically manage almost everything in the enterprise, from alert messaging for important follow-ups to vendor relations.

"FileMaker Pro offers the best value, flexibility and power for the most reasonable cost," says Ken Grindall, director of information technology for SARA, Inc. "FileMaker Pro also allows us to present a more user-friendly face to our other database systems through its ODBC functionality. We run an industry-standard accounting package with a Microsoft SQL Server back-end, but users log in through a graphically rich FileMaker Pro front-end to see formatted financial reports for their projects. It’s one way we help boost everyone’s efficiency."

Productivity is further enhanced through new dynamic charting features in FileMaker Pro 11. "On-the-fly chart rendering is by far our favorite feature of FileMaker Pro 11," says Grindall. "It only took a few test databases to truly master and it provides all the detail we need without having to do any database redesign. All we have to do is add a new layout of an existing table type and a chart is immediately available for our FileMaker Pro ERP solution."

Grindall adds that the new dynamic charting features in FileMaker Pro 11 will help drive more informed business decisions. "Charting in FileMaker Pro 11 adds a whole new dimension to our company project management reports and allows us to visually communicate projected resource needs to better manage labor," he says. "Even user statistics for our IT systems are more meaningful when rendered in chart form using FileMaker Pro 11. Certain data calls out for record-by-record comparison, but other data sets are just a blur until placed into the visual context possible with a chart."

Now that charting is available in FileMaker Pro 11, Grindall says every set of financial data will likely be augmented with a chart. "With FileMaker Pro 11, budgets with categories will get their own pie charts. Managers tracking projects will be able to see labor hours worked on a project over time through line charts. Labor and material dollars spent per week, month or year will be charted. Availability of specialized staff will be visible in daily, weekly and monthly bar graphs," says Grindall. "That kind of charting and reporting using FileMaker Pro 11 will help us gain real insights and better manage the business."
