At the elite level of play in basketball today, athletes must understand the nuances of every opposing team and player to gain a winning edge. That’s why so many basketball players, from high school hopefuls to the biggest stars in the NBA, turn to The Hoop Consultants, created by former college and international scout for the Boston Celtics, Mike Procopio.
Traditionally, when sizing up opponents and developing game strategies, teams and sports pros use a combination of Microsoft Word and Excel to track their insights. This involves hours of keying in hand-written notes and cutting and pasting data from reports. But Procopio has revolutionized player and game analysis by creating his own custom solution built on the FileMaker Platform and FileMaker Go for iPad.
It’s like I was driving in the slow lane all those years. Now I feel like I have a Ferrari. FileMaker has made me so much more efficient and better at my job, because it ties everything together before I go on TV.

A custom solution for NBA stars
The FileMaker Platform is flexible so it allows Procopio to create custom solutions for a variety of clients; he has assisted professional NBA players such as Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Dwyane Wade, Devin Harris, Channing Frye, Caron Butler, Michael Finley, Juwan Howard and over 150 others to refine their games during the off season, and achieve breakthrough successes during the season.
Procopio watches hundreds of games each year, making personal notes on player performance and combining his observations with scouting reports, league ratings and even anecdotal information about attitude on and off the court. In the past, he would often spend four hours each night typing up notes and entering data into spreadsheets. Producing a composite profile of a player would then take up to two hours.
Then Procopio started gathering the data using a custom FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Go for iPad solution. He created and maintains the solution himself, even though he doesn’t have a technical background. If he gets stuck on a rare occasion, he asks for help online from independent developer Phil Caulkins.
He now has a sophisticated solution that includes more than 250 fields covering everything from players’ personal information: height, weight, age and photo, to scouting reports, statistics, rating system data, agent contract information and more. The FileMaker interface includes tools, such as custom data entry lists, that make it easy and fast to capture large amounts of information. With the data in his FileMaker solution , Procopio has helped some of the NBA’s greatest players become even greater. For example, LA Lakers’ star Kobe Bryant directly acknowledged the huge impact Procopio had on his outstanding 2010 season (see the video at www.hoopconsultants.com).
Procopio can organize content efficiently and easily navigate to the information he needs with a single tap on his iPad.
Managing training events with ease
A key part of training and visibility for high school and college players is participation in intensive workout training sessions sponsored by Nike and other top companies. Procopio is often asked to manage these events. In the past, this was a laborious, time-consuming undertaking. To streamline the process, Procopio created a custom FileMaker solution running on iPad to track participation at workouts he coordinates for top college and high school players. Now, he can organize content efficiently and easily navigate to the information he needs with a single tap in his iPad. "I created a custom solution for capturing the event schedule, registration info, fees, billing and contact info for participants, all in 15 to 20 minutes," he says.
Spreading the success to college recruiting
Scouts are another major client base for Procopio. They come to him for in-depth reports that help them make decisions about which college players to recruit. After seeing a game or a workout, Instead of spending four hours each night typing up notes, Procopio can simply enter information while at the game using his iPad.
"As I’m watching college players, I can automatically pull in profiles of every player in the NBA at his position with the same height and overall profile,” says Procopio. “In 10 or 15 minutes I have examples that tell a scout whether we’ve found a new Kobe clone or other great player that could be a tremendous asset at the professional level."

Sharing his success with a colleague
One day, Procopio showed his FileMaker solution to friend and colleague Dave Telep, president of Dave Telep Scouting Services and senior national recruiting analyst for ESPN, who immediately saw its value. In turn, Procopio created a custom FileMaker solution for Telep. Previously, Telep regularly spent up to six hours each night entering data into Microsoft Word and Excel to prepare reports so that he could be informed for his television appearances on ESPN. The FileMaker solution now reduces that time to minutes.
"It’s like I was driving in the slow lane all those years,” says Telep. “Now I feel like I have a Ferrari. FileMaker has made me so much more efficient and better at my job, because it ties everything together before I go on TV."
Value continues to grow
For The Hoop Consultants and people like Dave Telep, the FileMaker solution has been invaluable for streamlining player analysis, generating reports, making television commentary more informed and advancing careers.
"I keep discovering more and more that I can do with FileMaker,” Procopio remarks. “My FileMaker solution is making life in this industry a lot easier to organize. I think FileMaker’s potential in sports, especially at the high school and college level, is enormous."
