Doug Gardner (Exoteric Inc.)

Session Description

In this session we're going to cover all the basics: data modeling, relational design, calculations, scripting, user interface and interaction design. By the end, you'll have a solid foundation in building a solid foundation-you'll know how to create the core of a database that is flexible and allows for growth for years to come. You'll understand the relationship graph and how table occurrences are intimately tied to layouts, which in turn provide the context for evaluating calculations, and because calculations are at the core of 80 percent of FileMaker's script steps, you'll be able to see how it all ties together.

Products & Technologies
  • FileMaker Pro 12
  • FileMaker Pro Advanced 12
What You Will Learn
  • To create a relational database that provides a solid foundation for future growth and development
  • To plan and build a database that doesn't get slower or harder to work with as it grows
  • To understand calculations and scripting in the context of your database
  • To incorporate the needs of the end-user into your database to achieve their goals and yours

Daniel A. Shockley (New York Hotel Trades Council)

Session Description

Many advanced and intermediate sessions at DevCon refer to commonly-used advanced developer techniques. This session will introduce intermediate developers to a handful of those techniques well enough that they will at least be able to follow conversations during other sessions where those techniques are referenced. Each will be accompanied by a set of outside sources to allow further reading. Learn about using virtual lists to bring together disparate data sets for reporting, using sets of custom functions to pass complex parameters, writing context-free code so that you can reuse scripts across different tables, using web viewers to create custom interface elements, using (third-party plug-in enhanced) ExecuteSQL to push changes to other tables, and more.

Products & Technologies
  • FileMaker Pro
  • FileMaker Pro Advanced
  • BaseElements plugin (free and open source)
  • SQL
  • HTML
  • CSS
  • Javascript
What You Will Learn
  • Quick explanations of multiple advanced techniques
  • Prepare you for sessions where these techniques are referenced
  • Starting point to boost your level of expertise
  • Examples: virtual Lists, complex script parameters, context-free coding, and more

Susan Prosser (DBHQ)

Session Description

Graphic design is a big part of the user experience. But fonts, color schemes and grids are just the gateway to good design. They're an inviting surface layer that invites users in to explore a database that is useful, works as intended and functions consistently. Those concepts - usefulness, usability, and functionality - are the basis of good user experience. In this session, you'll get an introduction to the theory and basic application of good user experience (UX). The best UX starts with a user centered approach. You'll learn how to ask the questions that reveal and then solve your database's design problems. You'll review examples of good and bad UX and discuss methods for making the bad ones better. You'll start filling your designer's toolbox with tools of the trade!

Products & Technologies
  • FileMaker Pro
  • FileMaker Pro Advanced
What You Will Learn
  • The components of user-centered design
  • To assess processes from the user's perspective
  • Methods for solving design problems once you've identified them

David Head (FileMaker, Inc.)

Session Description

This session will cover content from Module 3 of the FileMaker Training Series. A solid understanding of data modeling is essential for developing efficient and effective database solutions. In this session, we will take real world scenarios, create data models and then express that in a FileMaker relationship graph. Along the way, we will investigate the terminology and methods associated with data modeling, and the unique features of the FileMaker relationship graph. Finally, we will review the various tools and methods available in FileMaker Pro for leveraging the relationship structures you create.

Note: A Gold Pass is required for all FTS sessions. Attendees will receive one DVD of the FTS materials (includes modules, videos, exercise and demo files).
